Itinerary: Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau (140 Km) Once out of the Red River Delta, we pass limestone karst and into foothills populated by Muong people. We head straight at the main range before breaching a high and beautiful forested pass which descends into the hidden valley of Mai Chau. (L, D)
Day 2: Mai Chau – Son La (190 Km) On good road looking high over distant mountains we head up into a forested region populated by H'mong people. Soon after we follow a long valley floor covered in a sea of rice paddies surrounded by Black Thai villages. (B, L, D)
Day 3: Son La – Tuan Giao (70 Km) Continuing into the Black Thai heartland we breach an enormous 40km-long pass which looks out over Laos before descending into Tuan Giao. (B, L, D)
Day 4: Tuan Giao – Lai Chau (100 Km) We leave the good road behind and head into remote mountains, past forests inhabited by H’mong groups who wear massive horse-hair head-dresses. (B, L, D)
Day 5: Lai Chau – Tam Duong (110 Km) The most demanding and remote section of the drive takes us upstream along the side of a Black River tributary through forest on a bumpy dirt road past isolated pockets of Tay, Thai, H'mong and Dao peoples. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Tam Duong – Sapa (80 Km) We head straight towards the main Fansipan Mountain range and make a splendid climb up over the highest road in Vietnam before descending to the mountainous Sapa valley. (B, L, D)
Days 7 and 8: Sapa exploration We can either drive or walk down into the valley, explore the high mountain roads around Sapa or just rest and enjoy the views from our balconies at the Victoria Sapa Hotel. Return by night train to Hanoi. (B, L)
